If you’ve noticed longer, oddly configured combinations hauling containers or tippers down the highway, Performance Based Standards (PBS) is usually why. For Trucksales, we sat down with Les Bruzsa, Chief Engineer at the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator, to unpack how the scheme actually works and why it’s reshaping the heavy vehicle fleet.
The short version: instead of hard limits on length, width and mass, PBS vehicles are assessed on how they perform, braking, cornering, road impact, which is why an approved truck can look nothing like a standard one. The numbers are worth knowing too. More than 28,000 PBS combinations are now on Australian roads, delivering up to 35 per cent better productivity and a measurable drop in fatal crash risk compared with prescriptive vehicles.
If PBS approvals or combinations are relevant to your business, or you’re just curious why some rigs on the highway look a bit different these days, this is a solid primer straight from the regulator’s own engineering lead.
